Mariga applauds Benni McCarthy and Harambee Stars despite CHAN exit
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga has lauded the Harambee Stars and coach Benni McCarthy for their spirited performance at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Despite their heart-wrenching quarterfinal exit against Madagascar on August 22, 2025, the UEFA Champions League winner has celebrated the team.
The Stars fell 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
“So proud of the boys despite the CHAN exit. You fought with heart, and this is only the beginning of something special,” Mariga said, in a statement dated August 24, 2025, highlighting the resilience and potential of the team. His remarks came as Kenya’s campaign drew both praise and reflection, particularly for the players’ determination in a tough tournament.
Gratitude
Mariga extended heartfelt thanks to key stakeholders, including President William Ruto, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and fans across the country. “Your support carried the team all the way, from Homa Bay to Nairobi, Mombasa to Kakamega,” he said.
He also acknowledged the efforts of Pullman and Radisson Blu staff, who helped make match days memorable, underscoring the collective effort behind the team’s journey, which saw Kenya top a group including Morocco, Zambia, and Angola.
Despite the disappointment, Mariga urged fans to rally behind the team as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. “To coach Benny McCarthy and the entire technical bench—thank you for the foundation you’ve built. Now, we shift focus to the World Cup qualifiers. Let’s rally behind the team and show Africa what Kenya is made of!”

World Cup qualifiers
Coach McCarthy echoed Mariga’s optimism, praising the players’ commitment during training and matches. “Nothing but proud of what we achieved. The players gave everything every single day,” he said, also commending Madagascar for their nerves of steel in the shootout. Captain Abud Omar expressed regret to fans, stating, “Yesterday’s loss weighs heavily on us. We know we have let Kenyans down, and on behalf of the team, I sincerely apologise.”
Standout players, including Mansur Okwaro, Ryan Ogam, and Alphonce Omija, who scored Kenya’s goal, have shown promise. With Kenya sitting fourth in their World Cup qualifying group, McCarthy remains confident: “The group is still very open. We have five games to go, and there are plenty of points on offer.”
As the Stars regroup, Mariga’s words serve as a rallying call for the nation to believe in a brighter footballing future.
