Lilian Odira increases Kenya’s gold tally in Tokyo in record-shattering run
Kenya’s Lilian Odira produced the race of her life to storm to gold in the women’s 800 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
The 26-year-old ran a championship record of 1:54.62, a time that stunned both her rivals and fans inside the Olympic Stadium. Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell won silver in a personal best of 1:54.90, while Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson had to settle for bronze in 1:54.91.
Odira came into the championships as an outsider. Much of the attention was on defending world champion Mary Moraa, her compatriot Sarah Moraa, and Hodgkinson. Hunter Bell, who had shown fine form through the rounds, was also tipped for a medal. Few predicted that Odira would rise above them all when the medals were on the line.
In the opening lap, Odira stayed calm in the middle of the pack as Hodgkinson and Mary Moraa exchanged the lead. The Kenyan showed no signs of panic, keeping her rhythm and waiting for her moment. With around 200 metres to go, she began to close the gap. Then, in the home straight, she unleashed a decisive kick that carried her past the pair and into the history books.

Kenyan strength in depth
The result capped a strong showing for Kenya, which had three women in the final. Sarah Moraa finished fourth, just outside the medals, while Mary Moraa faded to seventh despite looking strong for much of the race.
Odira’s victory means Kenya has now secured back-to-back titles in the women’s 800m, even though Mary Moraa could not defend her crown. For Odira, who had won African silver earlier this year, the world title marks the biggest achievement of her career.
Her run also adds to Kenya’s growing medal tally in Tokyo. Emmanuel Wanyonyi claimed gold in the men’s 800m on Saturday, September 20, 2025, while Beatrice Chebet delivered a golden double in the 5,000m and 10,000m. Faith Kipyegon and Dorcus Ewoi have also contributed to the team’s success, lifting the nation into double digits in the medal standings.
