Lavin Asego hails Mwamba’s special effort following win over Kabras
By Luke Oluoch, August 2, 2025Mwamba RFC 7s coach Lavin Asego was full of praise for his team after serving up one stunning upset against Kabras Sugar in the Prinsloo circuit at the Nakuru Rugby Athletics on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Speaking after his charges stunned Kabras 17-15 to open wide the proceedings in Group D, the coach acknowledged his boys for a determined showing.
The former member of the Kenya Rugby Sevens team, Shujaa, particularly extolled an extra effort in the clash as key to the win over the fancied Western team, who approached the clash as pre-circuit favourites.
Fresh belief
“The boys are believing in themselves. It is what I have always asked of them. They are talented and know the game, but just coming out of their shell and expressing themselves is what has been lacking,” he said during an interview with Sportpesa.
Asego explained the facets of their game, they had to make adjustments to after a disappointing run in the Driftwood circuit.
“Credit to a few boys we have drafted who were unavailable in Mombasa. One of the things we have improved on is the efforts from the boys. Last week we had a lot of off-the-ball watching and no getting back to defend and miscommunication. We rectified and addressed that at training harshly, and you can see it paid,” he added.
Open pool
With the win, Mwamba’s quest for making it out of the group was further boosted after MMUST and Impala played out to a thrilling 15-15 draw in the other Pool D match.

MMUST took a 10-0 lead through Kevin Bukhala and Churchill Oyugi, but Impala clawed back with tries from Andrew Matoka and Derrick Kinyari, with David Nyangige converting one to level the match.
Meanwhile, Kenya Harlequin, KCB Rugby, Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, and hosts Nakuru RFC all booked their spots in the last eight after making it two wins from two.
KCB leads the quartet heading to last 8
Kenya Harlequin confirmed their place in the quarterfinals with a 26-7 comeback win over Stallions. After going behind early, Quins rallied with tries from Jan Remke, Dave Mwaura, Ramadhan Masete, and Patrick Wainaina to seal a comfortable win.
Hosts Nakuru RFC followed suit, dispatching MSC Rugby 19-0. Javan Otieno’s first-half try gave them a slender lead before second-half scores from Joel Mboya and Chrissant Ojwang sealed progression to the knockout rounds.
In pool C, KCB Rugby proved too strong for Kisumu RFC, running out 48-0 winners. Tries came from all angles, with Floyd Wabwire, Elvis Olukusi, Vincent Onyala, Lionel Ajeliti, Tyson Maina, and Festus Shiasi showcasing the bankers’ attacking firepower.
In contrast, Nondescripts were held to a 22-22 draw by a spirited Catholic Monks side. Both teams exchanged tries in a seesaw contest, with Monks snatching a draw with a late converted effort.
