KSSSA showdown: Shanderema ousts Mukumu, Kibabii claims Bungoma supremacy

Friends School Shanderema Boys have secured passage to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Count games after downing St. Ignatius Mukumu Boys 4-3 in post-match penalties of the Kakamega East Sub-county Term Two County games on Wednesday, June 6, 2025, at the Sigalagala National Polytechnic grounds.
The clash was a rescheduled meeting after fans’ violence halted the initial meeting on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
The controversy arose when Mukumu Boys scored a goal, but the referee and assistant referee took time before officially disallowing it.
Fans’ trouble
This delay led to frustration among Mukumu supporters, resulting in heightened tensions. To ensure safety, officials decided to suspend the game tied at 1-1.
Mukumu was pooled in an easy-looking group alongside Fesbeth Academy, Shabwali, and Shamiloli High School.
On their part, Shanderema made its way to the final from a preliminary stage where they pooled with Munyu, Shidodo, and Mukulusu High.
Wednesday’s rescheduled fixture saw the same nail-biting action witnessed despite early exchanges proving cagey all through to regulation and extra time.
The 2023 western champions, under coach Kjevin Asuba, showed their mettle in the post-match lotteries to edge a hard-fighting Tsunami Boys under the tutelage of former Kakamega Homeboyz’s attacker Dennis Mukaisi.
Penalty decider
After successfully dispatching their respective opening penalties, Shanderema’s Eagles missed their second, but calm was restored with Musingu’s kicker also missing his subsequent penalty.
Both respective takers from either side maintained cool heads to score until Mukumu missed their last spot kick to hand the advantage to the Eagles.
The victory confirmed Shanderema’s status as the KSSSA Term Two winners from the sub-country, who now advance to the county level, where a clash with regional heavyweights from the larger western region awaits.
Meanwhile, in Bungoma County, St. Mary’s Kibabii Boys edged out archrivals Bukembe Boys in the Bungoma South Sub-County final to secure a place in the county stage of the KSSSA Term Two Games.

Kibabii, under principal Nicodemus Ogeto, scored the lone goal in the tense final to avenge a group stage defeat from the Kanduyi-based side and secure passage to the counties.
Bukembe made its way to the quarterfinals after shrugging off competition from a Group D comprising Maliki, Kebee, and Misikhu. They punched their ticket to the final following a 3-0 win over Lwanda Boys.
Kibabii’s path to the finals saw them emerge winners in a Group A where they pooled rivals Teremi Boys, Kipsis from Mt. Elgon, and Toloso High School.
The finalist needed the lottery of post-match shootouts to beat Kimugui Boys 4-2 and set a date with Bukembe in the finals.
