KRU unveils Driftwood 7s pools for 2025 circuit kick-off

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has officially unveiled the pools for the 2025 Driftwood 7s, marking the opening leg of this year’s National Sevens Circuit.

The announcement was made via KRU’s official X platform on Monday, July 21, 2025.

The tournament, scheduled for July 26–27, 2025, at the Mombasa Sports Club, will see 16 top-tier teams clash in what promises to be a thrilling start to the six-leg circuit.

Top seeds return

Defending champions Kenya Harlequin headline Pool A. Quins, who ended a 12-year title drought last season, will face Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Blak Blad, and Mwamba RFC as they begin their title defense.

Pool B features tournament heavyweights Kabras Sugar RFC, alongside Catholic Monks, Nakuru RFC, and Impala RFC. In Pool C, last year’s third-place finishers KCB RFC will take on Nondescripts RFC, Daystar Falcons, and tournament hosts Mombasa RFC. Pool D comprises Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, Stallions Rugby, and Kabarak University.

Division two breakdown

KRU has also confirmed Division Two competition, where 36 clubs applied to take part. Selection was based on several criteria, including KRU affiliation, regional representation particularly from the coastal region previous tournament performance, and official rankings.

Division Two pools include teams such as AP Warriors, Kilifi Titans, Likoni RFC, and the University of Nairobi Mean Machine in Pool A; Embu RFC, Kaya Rugby, North Coast Stormers, and MKU Thika in Pool B;

Homeboyz RFC, Jackals, NYS Eagles, and Makueni RFC in Pool C; Kisumu RFC, KCNP, NYS Spades, and Sigalagala NP in Pool D; and South Coast Pirates, Vihiga Granites, Zetech Oaks, and Northern Suburbs in Pool E.

The 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit calendar is as follows: Driftwood 7s (July 26–27), Prinsloo 7s (August 2–3), Christie 7s (August 16–17), Embu 7s (August 23–24), Kabeberi 7s (September 6–7), and Dala 7s (September 13–14).

As the circuit begins in Mombasa, all eyes will be on the top contenders to set the pace in this year’s title race
