Elite and budding athletes converge in Kericho for track and field events championships slated for this weekend at the Kericho Stadium.

Stakes are high as athletes from several parts of the country, among them world beaters, are expected to square it out for honours on Saturday, in a nail-biting event that Kericho governor Erick Mutai is also expected to grace.

Athletics Kenya (AK) Kericho branch chairman Japheth Kemei said that preparations for the event are almost complete, adding that everything is going on as planned.“We are finalizing preparations for the event and by Friday (tomorrow) everything would have been completed”, Kemei said.

At the same time, he urged AK members, coaches and team officials to send him team entries that state the ages and clubs that the would-be participants come from before Friday, ahead of the Saturday event.

However, the 2022 3000m Steeplechase World champion (junior category) Faith Cherotich, who hails from Kericho County ,will not be available for the event as she will be preparing for the upcoming Rome Diamond League set for June 2.

Fresh from this month’s Doha Diamond League and Kip Keino Classic. Cherotich is oozing confidence in posting impressive results in the upcoming world major event.

During the Doha Diamond League, she clinched position three with a time of 9:16 in the 3000m Steeplechase and bagged silver in the Kip Keino Classic that was staged in Nairobi on May 13. She clocked 9:15 in the same race.
