Kenya wheelchair basketball team head coach Sarah Florence has vowed to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics as the squad prepares for the Para Africa games in Ghana.

Speaking during a training session at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi yesterday, Sarah said that Algeria is her only worry.

“Algeria is a tricky opponent. Last time we met in 2017, during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifier in South Africa they beat our ladies’ team and they have always dominated in Africa,” said Sarah adding that this time they are well-prepared.

This will be the first time that Kenya will be sending a ladies’ team to the Para Africa games after qualifying together with their men’s counterparts during the East Africa regional Para Africa games qualifiers in May, Tanzania where Kenya reigned champions in both categories.

Sarah hopes for a podium finish but her main concern remains defending African champions Algeria for the games slated for September 1 to 13 in Ghana.

The men’s wheelchair basketball team will be making their second appearance at the continental showpiece event after finishing third last time out in Algeria (2007), where the hosts dominated to end up with the top honour, a gold medal.

Both men and women teams, started their training on Tuesday this week and finished yesterday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, and are upbeat about bringing honour to the nation.

The Kenya National Paralympic Committee vice-chair Bhaveet Chudasama assured the squads on Thursday during the training session that the federation is working closely with the Ministry of Sports to make sure that all is well for the para-athletes.
