Kenyans win Eindhoven marathon, shine in Lisbon

It was yet another superb outing for Kenyan athletes as Pius Karanja and Paskalia Chepkogei won the Eindhoven Marathon in the men’s and women’s races respectively.

Karanja won the men’s race in 2:06:55 ahead of compatriots Gevin Kerich and Joshua Kemboi who clocked 2:07:07 and 2:08.09 respectively to sweep a clean podium finish.

Chepkogei on the other hand clocked 2:22:47 to win the women’s race as Zeddy Chebet clocked 2:35:16 to come in third.

In Portugal, Bornes Kitur came out victorious at the Lisbon Marathon after timing 2:24:17 with his Kenyan compatriot Paul Eyanaye placed 8th in the men’s race.

At the Lisbon Half, Faith Jeptoo finished third in the women’s race in 1:01.54 while Isaac Temoi clocked 1:01.58 for a 5th place finish in the men’s race.

Kitur obliterated the field to win the women’s EDP Lisbon Marathon in a personal best of 2:24:17 in the Portugal capital missing the course record by three seconds. Kitur, winner of the 2017 Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, beat Ethiopia’s duo of Sorome Negash Amente and Buzunesh Getachew Gudeta to second and third places respectively.

Sorome won in 2:25:57 while Buzunesh won in 2:26:01. The top five runners in the men’s race broke the 2 hours and 10 minutes barrier meanwhile in the women’s race the top six finished the course inside 2 hours and 30 minutes.“I was very happy for the win here in Lisbon.

I enjoyed much this course, flat well,”said Kitur.In 2019 Kitur emerged third in 21Km Women’s race at the fourth edition of First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero Half Marathon.

Brillian Kipkoech cut the tape in 1:07:02 while Evelyn Chirchir was second 1:07:03 as Kitur completed the podium in 1:07:23.In the men’s race it was a clean sweep for  Ethiopians as Andualem Shiferaw led 1-2-3 clocking a new course record at 2:05:45, as HaftuTeklu Asefa was second in  02:06:33 and Birhan Nebebew Tesfaye sealed the podium places in 02:07:04 while Kenya’s Julius Kipkorir Tuwei was fourth in 02:08:23.
