Kenyans target gold at Africa kabaddi finals

Africa Kabaddi Confederation Secretary General (SG) Mathew Mwangi has confirmed that it’s now all systems go for the fourth edition of the Africa Kabaddi Senior Championships to be held in Tunisia from July 26 to 31, 2025.
Speaking in Nairobi on Monday, Mwangi, who also doubles as Kenya Kabaddi Sports Federation (KKSF) chairperson, confirmed that a meeting held between President of World Kabaddi Dr Osama Said and Tunisian government official agreed that the North African nation will host the Africa Championship, which will feature both men’s and women’s categories.
“This will be the fourth edition of the Africa Kabaddi Championships and we are glad to be part of it as Kenya. Continentally, it is important to note that we are growing steadily with the sport now gradually gaining popularity among school-going children,” quipped Mwangi, adding that Kenya is set to send a strong team of both men and women who are expected to come back with gold medals.
Mwangi also added that seven countries have now confirmed their participation in this event, with hosts Tunisia leading the way for the North Africans, followed by Algeria and Egypt, while Cameroon will be the lone representative from the west. Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi are all leading a strong contingent of Kabaddi athletes from East Africa.
Similarly, Osama confirmed that all referees, coaches and administrators are up to date and ready for the championships after a training course held from April 24 to 29 this year, assuring that everything is now in order and prepared.
Kenya hosted and won the first edition in both categories of men and women back in 2018, before a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, when neighbours Tanzania took over in 2021 for the second edition, a duel that saw Kenya claiming top honours in the men’s category while Egypt won the women’s.
Cairo played host to the third edition in 2023, a scenario painted in black and white with clear indications that hosts Egypt took no chances and had no second option apart from winning and they did that in style, winning both the men’s and women’s categories.
