Kenyan golf stars eye glory in South Africa after good show in Naivasha

A group of 10 golfers from the East Africa region, including Kenya’s top pros and Rwanda’s rising star Celestin Nsanzuwera, are set to battle for Sunshine Tour cards at the final Qualifying School (Q-School) tournament, scheduled for tomorrow through Friday at the Heron Banks Golf Course in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The ten earned their slots after excelling at the inaugural East Africa Swing Q-School held last week at the Great Rift Valley Golf Resort in Naivasha. The final Q-School showdown will see the region’s best tee off against top talent from across the continent for a place on the prestigious Sunshine Tour.
Among those flying the region’s flag are seasoned pros Dismas Indiza (Kakamega Golf Club), Greg Snow (Muthaiga), Samuel Njoroge (Kenya Railways) and elite amateur John Lejirma (Royal Nairobi).
They will be joined by Edwin Mudanyi (Karen), Simon Ngige (Kiambu), Jastas Madoya (Great Rift), Mike Kisia (Kenya Railways), Njoroge Kibugu (Windsor) and Nsanzuwera of Kigali Golf Resort & Villas.
Greg Snow, who tied for third at the East Africa Q-School, is confident heading into the final qualifier. “I’m looking forward to some great golf. It’s about playing solid and hopefully earning that Sunshine Tour card.”
Reflecting on the Naivasha leg, Snow admitted to a few errors but said the tough conditions prepared them well for Johannesburg.
Samuel Njoroge, who also tied for third, said the experience taught him the value of consistency. “It wasn’t easy, but I’m happy to have qualified. My focus now is to play well and go for that final tour card,” he said, adding that the exposure in South Africa will be a major milestone in his professional career.
The group departs Nairobi on Sunday, April 6, and is expected to face a stern test in Johannesburg as they chase spots on one of Africa’s most competitive golf tours.
The Q-School tournament marks a significant moment for the region, especially with the Sunshine Tour and IMG-backed East Africa Swing initiative opening new pathways for players across East Africa.
