Kenya’s Women’s 3×3 basketball team emerged as the African Champions, securing a thrilling 21-20 victory over hosts Egypt in the final of the FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup 2023 held in Cairo.

The Kenyan team, consisting of Hildah Indasi, Madina Okot, Mercy Wanyama, and tournament MVP Natalie Mwangale put up a good show throughout the competition.

Both Kenya and Egypt were undefeated on their journey to the final and when they faced off, Egypt initially held the advantage in the decisive match.

With Egypt just steps away from victory with a 19-13 lead, Kenya staged a remarkable comeback. Natalie Mwangale, who had been outstanding throughout the tournament, sealed the improbable win for Kenya with a buzzer-beating two-pointer.

Madina Okot stood out in the game with an impressive 11-point, 18-rebound performance.

Mwangale’s consistent excellence, both offensively and defensively, made Kenya a formidable force, earning her the MVP award.

She led the Team of the Tournament, alongside Egypt’s Raneem Mohamed and Harisoa Hajanirina of Madagascar, who secured silver and bronze, respectively. The team is now set for the Paris Olympics.

In the men’s category, Egypt concluded a perfect run in the competition with an 18-15 victory over Nigeria.

Ahmed Mohamed and Mido Taha contributed significantly to the scoring, while Amr Zahran sealed the win with a thunderous dunk.

Ramy Basha’s impactful performance earned him the MVP award, leading the Men’s Team of the Tournament alongside Robert Chima Ukawuba of Nigeria and Elly Randriamampionona of Madagascar, who claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the U17 Africa Cup held on November 30 in Cairo, Egypt claimed gold in both the men’s and women’s categories.
