Kenya U20 pick first win in World U20 Trophy
Kenya U20 displayed their rugby prowess in a thrilling encounter against Hong Kong China at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, securing a hard-fought victory that left the spectators delighted.
Tight-head prop Mike Oduor emerged as the star of the match, scoring two decisive tries that paved the way for Kenya’s first triumph in this year’s tournament.
With this victory, Kenya set up an exciting fifth-place play-off clash against their longtime rivals, Zimbabwe, scheduled for Sunday.
Kenya U20 early efforts
The game was a closely fought battle, with both teams demonstrating their determination and skill. Though lacking the same drama as the day’s opening game between Zimbabwe and the USA, this match was equally compelling, captivating fans until the very end.
Kenya’s defence proved to be the key factor in their success, with players like Andy Cole Omolo making crucial turnovers that frustrated Hong Kong China’s attacking efforts.
This defensive resilience allowed Kenya to maintain a slim lead, with little to choose between the two sides throughout the game.
The match started with Mike Oduor scoring his first try just five minutes into the game, converting it skillfully with the help of fly-half Eddy Wambugu. Hong Kong China’s full-back, Dylan McCann, narrowed the gap with a penalty shortly after.
The momentum shifted as their captain, number eight Tyler McNutt, powered over the try line after a strong carry by lock Glenn Hui, followed by McCann’s successful conversion.
However, Kenya fought back, drawing level with a well-taken penalty by full-back Faran Juma. Just before half-time, number eight Jacktone Omondi demonstrated his strength and determination, crashing over the line to put Kenya back in the lead.
Kenya U20 Second half
The second half saw a tense battle for supremacy, as McCann’s penalty brought Hong Kong China within two points of Kenya. But Oduor wasn’t done yet. He added another try to his tally, brilliantly converted by scrum-half Patrick Wainaina, giving Kenya a two-score advantage.
As the clock ticked down, Hong Kong China launched a spirited attack, changing their entire front row to challenge Kenya’s dominance in the set-piece. However, Kenya responded in kind, regaining control and allowing blindside flanker Laban Kipsang to test the opposition’s defence with powerful carries.
With just seconds remaining, Kenya faced a penalty, but they held their nerve and thwarted Hong Kong China’s desperate attempt to score a last-minute try. The final whistle signaled jubilant celebrations from the Kenyan team and their passionate fans, celebrating a hard-earned victory.
Both teams showcased exceptional talent and fighting spirit, making the match an enthralling spectacle for the spectators. While Kenya emerged triumphant on this occasion, Hong Kong China’s valiant effort made it clear that they were worthy adversaries.
