Kenya picked to host CECAFA U-18 boys tournament as 2023 Kagame Cup is cancelled
Kenya has been selected as the host country for two tournaments organized by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).
The upcoming events include the CECAFA Under-18 Boys Championship and the Zonal qualifiers for the Pan-African Schools Championship.
CECAFA U-18 dates
The CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship is scheduled to take place from November 25 to December 9, promising The tournament will provide an excellent platform for emerging talents to showcase their abilities and compete at an international level.
In addition to the U-18 Boys Championship, Kenya will also host the Zonal qualifiers for the Pan-African Schools Championship. The specific dates for this event are yet to be confirmed for the event set for December.
“Kenya will host both the CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship between November 25 and December 9 and the Zonal qualifiers for the Pan African Schools Championship later in December,” CECAFA announced.
The CECAFA Kagame Cup 2023, however, will not be held this year due to a busy CAF/FIFA calendar, as announced by Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director.
This decision is disappointing for fans who were eagerly awaiting the showdown between the top teams in the Zone.
”It is unfortunate that once again we shall not have this tournament this year. We had hoped to stage the tournament to also help our teams in the region use to prepare ahead of the CAF competitions which start next month, ” Gecheo stated.
CECAFA Kagame Cup
The last CECAFA Kagame Cup took place in 2021, with Uganda’s Express FC emerging victorious after defeating Nyasa Big Bullets FC from Malawi 1-0 in the final.
Furthermore, the CECAFA U-23 Championship, originally slated to take place in Ethiopia, has been rescheduled and will now be held in January next year.
This change allows for better organization and ensures high-quality competition for the participating teams.
The football action in the CECAFA Zone is set to kick off earlier with the CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship commencing on July 25 in Tanzania.
Following that, football enthusiasts can look forward to the CAF Women’s Champions League for the CECAFA Zone, scheduled for August 12-30 in Uganda. Additionally, the CECAFA U-15 Boys Championship will take place in Uganda from November 4 to 18.
