Once again the Kenyan Roll Ball teams have made a mark at the sixth World Cup Championship in Pune, India after whitewashing their rivals in a hotly-contested duel that saw the Kenyan teams play proficiently.

Yesterday, the men’s team routed Latvia in the semi-final of the World Cup Championships. With an overwhelming victory of 14-1, they advanced to the final round where they faced off against the host country, India, a team that has also been making waves in the competition.

India proved to be a thorn in the flesh but Team Kenya’s determination to triumph could be seen. True to this, they thumped India 7-4 making it to be this year’s title holders. India scooped silver whereas Senegal scooped bronze.

The women’s team, which played on Tuesday, heroically vanquished Egypt 5-0 hence managing to defend their World Cup title. The Kenyan team achieved this historic accomplishment with a decisive victory.

The match started with a bang, with Kenya taking the lead in the first 34 seconds of the game after Angela Kithinji scored the first goal. When it clocked at 01:12, Judith Rop netted the second goal for team Kenya.

This made the team more optimistic, and the defenders from the Kenyan side could be seen beginning to control the game – playing with so much precision and skill.  In the second half of the match, Team Kenya’s defence was held so strong and prevented Egypt from having any vivid chances of scoring. The women’s team further capitalized on their control of the ball and scored three more goals to put the game out of reach for Egypt.

In the three goals added in the second half, Angela Kithinji added another goal (25:08) bringing her total to two, whereas Veronica Satia scored the other two in 39:34 and 44:08.

The victory marks an incredible achievement for the Kenyan team, who have now won back-to-back World Cup titles (2015, 2019 and 2023) and brought home gold, whereas, in 2017, they bagged silver.  Speaking exclusively to People Daily Newspaper, Coach Martin Abunde noted: “It was a good game. I am so happy that our game plan worked.

It is difficult to beat a team twice in a tournament of such magnitude therefore, we had prepared for anything but worked for a result that favoured us ,and  luckily all went on well.”

The Kenyan Roll Ball greats are due to jet back to the country later this afternoon (1400 hours), at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
