Police FC midfielder Kenneth Muguna has said that the postponement of the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) is a positive move.

CAF, citing numerous reasons, moved the continental showpiece to August from February, and Muguna, a Premier League winner with Gor Mahia, feels this is good as it will give Harambee Stars ample time to prepare.

“I think the postponement is positive as it gives us enough room to prepare, and by August, we will be ready,” Muguna told the press during the CAF’s CHAN draw that was held in Nairobi on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Kenya will face Morocco, Zambia, DR Congo, and Angola in Group A, and although many concur this is a group of death, Muguna is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“We are looking forward to meeting any country that comes by, and the opponents in the group are good to us players because it gives us a chance to test our level,” he added.

Currently, Francis Kimanzi is leading Harambee Stars‘ coaching staff, and Muguna believes the familiarity he has with the players is good for the preparation for CHAN.

“For me, this is not a new technical bench; most of them have been there. For us players, we have been there too. It is just a matter of preparation, and with the right effort, we can go as far as possible and maybe win the trophy,” he added.

Mulee’s take

Muguna’s comment comes after former Tusker FC head coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee asked the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to stick with Kimanzi for the CHAN tournament.

”It would be catastrophic to bring in a new coach right now since we don’t have a lot of time before the tournament. The new coach will need time to understand the players and the environment, and before he has settled, the tournament will be with us.

“I propose that we let us retain the three men because they already understand the players and the environment, and we just support them to do well,” Mulee said.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will co-host the tournament.
