KCB RFC retained their Impala Floodlit title after beating Ngong Road-based Nondescript 20-3 in a tense high momentum final staged at the Impala Saracens.

The Bankers scored two converted tries in the second half to successfully defend the title they won two years ago

KCB coached by Curtis Olago were rewarded by tries from Oscar Sarano and flanker Andrew Amonde with the duo touching down a try each of the mauls as the ever-present fullback Isaac Njoroge and centre Levy Amunga converted the extras respectively.

On the other side, Nondies were fortunate to earn the only point with fullback Salem Benson slotting over the penalty as they missed three penalties and two drop goals that could have won the match for the well-oiled side.

The victory now sees the Bankers equal the University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine’s record of nine victories at the Impala Floodlit.

KCB skipper Peter Warutere assured their die-hard fans of better things ahead as the current crop of players showcased resilience, teamwork and discipline as the Bankers went on to be crowned this year’s champions.

Nondies on the other hand were eyeing their fourth cup success, having won the inaugural edition in 1983 before clinching the 2002 and 2012 titles.

Good positions

While admitting that they are a young team, Nondescripts skipper Steven Odhiambo Odhiambo said theyrun the show  well although their kickers had it rough in the field.

“We failed to convert penalties from good positions and such mistakes get punished when you are playing a good side like KCB,” said Odhiambo.

“Moving forward we shall aim to get better every day as we focus on winning the Championship next season and return to Kenya Cup,” Odhiambo said, adding that  playing the top two teams in the country and beating one has raised their hope.

Nondies stunned Menengai Oilers who were last year’s Kenya Cup runners-up 16-11 in the semi-finals.

Nondies coach Oliver Callum said they were definitely disappointed having let off the match after they dominated for the better part of the game.

“The three missed penalties and poor decision making by going for two drop goals that missed cost us,” said Callum, who was still remained proud of his players’ performance.

In other fixtures, Nakuru-based Menengai Oilers finished third after they edged out Blak Blad from Kenyatta University 23-12 in the playoff.

Nakuru Universities combined claimed the Universities title after beating United States International University (USIU) 45-22 in the final of the varsity category.
