KCB extend lead in Kenya Cup league
Former Kenya Cup champions KCB Rugby maintained their top position in the local rugby circuit after a 24-03 win against Kenyatta University Blak Blad at the KCB Sports club.
Kenyan internationals Andrew Amonde, Darwin Mukidza, Johnstone Olindi, and Wilfred Waswa were on target for the Bankers as Curtis Olago’s side showed its intent to reclaim a title they lost to Kakamega-based Kabras Sugar.
In other fixtures of the weekend, Kenya Harlequin posted their second win in two matches after thrashing Catholic Monks 45-15 at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA).
The Paul Murunga-coached side went on a signing spree to bring on board 13 new players as the former Kenya Cup champions seek to reclaim their lost glory.
University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine beat their counterparts, Masinde Muliro University 24-23 to post their first win of the season. Both teams went into the game craving a win and avoiding the relegation zone.
The win by Machine saw the students collect seven points in the Kenya cup after five games.
In Nakuru Menengai Oilers beat rivals Nakuru 25-18 to claim the Nakuru derby bragging rights in a fixture staged at the ASK Nakuru Showground.
Courtesy of the win by the Gibson Weru-coached side, the Oilers maintain their second place in the Kenya Cup log after five rounds played so far.
Mwamba RFC bounced back to winning ways with a 27-20 win over Varsity side Strathmore Leos at the Strathmore University Sports Complex.
Winning try
Despite losing their key players during the mid-season transfer period the Students showcased their intent to qualify for the playoffs but Kulabu had other ideas with Chrispine Onyango pouncing on a loose ball to score the winning try.
Leos lost Clinton Khasai to rivals Kenya Harlequin, Festus Shiasi who was signed by KCB and Philemon Olang’ who was signed by championship side Nondescripts.
This was the perfect start to a new year after Kulabu was disappointed 24-23 by Catholic University Monks, just before the festive season break.
Mwamba will now shift their focus to the upcoming fixture against an in-form KCB next weekend, with the bankers having won all its five rounds of games.
The much-awaited fixture between defending champions Kabras Sugar and Homeboyz RFC was postponed.
Meanwhile Impala RFC bounced back to winning ways after a convincing 36-13 win over the University of Eldoret Trojans in a Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) championship action at the Impala Club on Saturday.
Courtesy of the win the Ngong road-based side kept their hopes of qualifying for play-off rounds which eventually might see them make a comeback to the Kenya Cup flight after just one season.
Another former Kenya Cup side Nondescripts RFC who are currently leading the Championship league table saw their game against Kabarak University postponed to a later date.
In other championship fixtures played on Saturday Shamas edged visiting Western Bulls 13-10 at the RFUEA Grounds while South Coast Pirates were awarded a 28-0 walkover scoreline following Eldoret RFC’s no-show in Diani.
Daystar Falcons rallied from behind to defeat Kisumu RFC 22-13 at the Strathmore University ground in Madaraka.
Zetech Oaks fixture against varsity side USIU Marshalls fixture was postponed.
