Mathare United coach John Kamau has warned against reading too much into their preseason triumphs, emphasising that they still have a long season to go before the new season starts.

Speaking after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Posta Rangers, the coach attributed the victory to positive preparations that started right after the end of the last season.

“I never have time to waste. We have been working on our team philosophy from the first day of preseason with a view to optimising the team. When you have your team philosophy settled, then the rest of things usually fall in place,” he told the club portal.

Kamua has, however, noted that much remains to be achieved as he seeks to get his team to the desired levels.

“Let us not get carried away. I know the win is a good motivation to the boys, but we are still a work in progress, and we have a long way ahead,” he added.

No preferential treatment

The tactician’s remarks are his most recent in a series of cautions he has sent heading into the coming season.

Speaking to the club’s Facebook portal on Saturday, August 23, 2025, Kamau warned that there will be no preferential treatment to the team’s playing unit as he builds a competitive team for the new Football Kenya Federation PL campaign.

He stated that player selection will be based on an individual’s performance rather than a profile of their history.

Basically here we don’t give you playing time based on history; instead, it is based on what one gives in the training sessions heading into the season.

“So far we are happy with the new signings. We have been experimenting with pushing Yobo (Jacob Onyango) to a more advanced position. He is doing well there rather than playing in a deeper role,” he stated while speaking on one of the team’s new recruits.

Survived scare

With the new league season set to kick off on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Slum Boys will be seeking improved tidings after surviving a relegation scare to finish tenth on the log in the 2024 season.

According to the opening-day fixtures revealed by the Football Kenyan Federation, Mathare will start off their campaign against Posta Rangers.

The clash slated for Kasarani Annex starting at 4:00 pm on Monday, August 22, 2025, will conclude the round one fixtures.
