Kabras Sugar RFC reclaimed their pride in style on Saturday with a spirited 26-10 win over hosts Nakuru RFC in the final of the Prinsloo Sevens, the fifth leg of the National Sevens Circuit.

Coming into the tournament under pressure after back-to-back semifinal exits, Kabras proved their critics wrong with a clinical performance, blending flair and power to dominate the hosts in front of a charged Nakuru Athletic Club crowd.

Redemption well earned

Kabras, coached by Edwin Achayo, were keen to redeem themselves following criticism over inconsistent form since the circuit kicked off. Their attacking intent was evident from the onset, with flying winger Brian Tanga opening the scores after a clever offload from Barry Robinson.

The Sugarmen took a 14-5 halftime lead, capitalizing on Nakuru’s errors and showing better game management. The second half saw Kabras control possession and territory, with captain Dan Angwech leading from the front, snuffing out Nakuru’s comeback hopes with a decisive try in the 10th minute.

“This one means a lot. We’ve heard what people have been saying, and today we let our rugby speak. We stayed focused, trusted the system, and it paid off,” said Angwech after lifting the trophy.

Hosts fall short

Nakuru RFC, buoyed by home support, had impressed throughout the weekend, knocking out Kenya Harlequins and Menengai Oilers on their way to the final. However, their defensive frailties were exposed by a Kabras side hungry for redemption.

Nakuru’s lone try came through fly-half Collins Kimutai, who was a bright spark despite limited service.

Head coach Gibson Weru praised his team’s effort but admitted Kabras were superior on the day. “They played a smarter game. We’ll regroup and bounce back,” Weru said.

Eyes on final leg

With Prinsloo Sevens wrapped up, all eyes now turn to the final leg of the circuit in Kakamega next weekend. Kabras, now joint leaders in the standings alongside KCB, will be looking to seal the overall title at home.
