Kenya Harlequin’s quest for an unprecedented record-extending 14th Driftwood title came to an abrupt end at the hands of Nakuru Rugby Football Club on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Mombasa Sports Club.

Wanyore, as they are affectionately known, mounted a thrilling performance of grit and defensive determination to edge the reigning champions 19-17 in the first quarter-final clash.

The much-hyped Mighty Quins, touted as pre-tournament favourites met proceedings tough against the determined minnows who bagged the priceless victory.

“WANYORE FOR THE WIN! Quarterfinal thriller sealed! We edge out Kenya Harlequins 19–17 in a nail-biter and march straight into the Main Cup Semis at Driftwood 7s. Big heart. Big game. Bigger dreams.”

“Let’s finish strong, Wanyore!” the club posted after the victory.

The Quins, under the tutelage of Patrice Agunda and former international William Ambaka, sealed their place on the stage after an impressive cruise in the pool phases.

On their part, Nakuru had shown resolute resilience coming down from a loss against Kabras Sugar to claim successive wins against Catholic Monks and Impala RFC in 24-0 and 12-7 victories, respectively, to progress to the main cup quarters.

The victory seals Nakuru-side’s spot in the competition’s semi-finals, keeping their dreams for the title on course.

Action now shifts to the other main cup quarters with equally captivating ties on cards.

In the clash set to light up the Mombasa arena, Strathmore Leos clash against Nondescript.

Leos topped a tough-looking pool consisting of Menengai Oilers, Stallions Rugby, and Kabarak University.

Meanwhile, KCB rugby will face off against Menengai Oilers as Kabras Sugar locks horns against Masinde Muliro University in a western derby tie.

Speaking ahead of their clash against Nondies, Leos Gabriel Ayimba exuded optimism that the side’s teamwork, as manifested through their pool games, would push the team to greater heights.

“We hope for the best going into the quarter finals. I will be having another exam on Monday. So I hope we can win on Sunday and get me in the mood for the Monday exam,” he stated.
