Junior Stars advance to U17 AFCON qualifiers semis after edging South Sudan
Kenya’s Junior Stars secured a 2-0 victory over South Sudan to advance to the semifinals of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The win keeps Kenya on course for a place at the 2026 AFCON U17 finals in Morocco.
The match started strongly for Kenya, with Derrick Khatete scoring in the 12th minute. Kenya dominated possession for much of the first half. Nicholas Acholla tested the South Sudan goalkeeper with a direct free kick in the 24th minute.
Moments later, Raphael Omondi fired a long-range shot wide after a slick passing move. Armstrong Omondi also had a free kick deflected for a corner as Kenya pressed for a second goal before halftime.
South Sudan threatened briefly in the second half. In the 54th minute, David Darako broke through on goal but shot wide. Kenya continued to create chances, forcing a strong save from the goalkeeper. Coach William Muluya made substitutions, bringing on fresh players who injected energy and pace.
Brighton Nacheri came close twice before assisting Trevor Nasasiro in the 89th minute for Kenya’s second goal. Nasasiro’s finish sealed the win and confirmed Kenya’s place in the semifinals.

Kenya eyes group finish
The Junior Stars now sit level on points with Ethiopia at the top of their group, ahead of their final group match against the hosts on November 27, 2025. Ethiopia has already qualified for the semifinals, and Kenya will aim to finish the group stage strongly.
Kenya Football Federation president Hussein Mohammed praised the team’s maturity and character after the win.
“A big congratulations to our Junior Stars for a solid win over South Sudan and sealing a place in the semi-finals of the CECAFA AFCON U17 Qualifiers. Let’s stay focused and finish the group stage on a high as we take on Ethiopia,” he said.
Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, also congratulated the team.
“You are the Stars, you belong to the skies! Kenya stands firmly behind you,” he tweeted.
