London sevens will be the first world rugby sevens series to adopt the 12-team competition model whereas Kenya sevens rugby team, alongside Uruguay, Canada and Tonga will be in 4-team relegation playoffs to decide whom among the quartet will earn their core status back to the crème de la crème competition while the three others will drop to the Challenger series.

All the four teams vying for space in the play-offs to be played tomorrow and Sunday have what it takes to survive. The World Rugby has assured fans of a fair play that will have all three play just two matches on the opener day and one more on Sunday morning to determine the top two who will vie for the sole ticket to remain the 12th core side of the HSBC sevens series.

Shujaa kick off their campaign against Canada at 1.51pm  this Saturday and close the day against Tonga at 4.59pm before returning to the arena on Sunday to wrap up their round-robin contention against Uruguay at 2.19 PM.

The top two positions will guarantee those teams the final chance to make it or break it while the bottom two will be certain of dropping to the Challenger series competition where it could be a nightmare getting out owing to the quality sides in that division.

Kenya’s first objective in London this weekend will be to hold onto the first two positions and await the final playoff.

Damian McGrath’s charges placed themselves in that position owing to failure to secure quarterfinals appearances in the first ten legs and also poor points collection as recorded in both Hong Kong legs alongside Los Angeles 7s where the team managed three points combined out of the possible 66 points. Also in Capetown and last weekend’s Toulouse 7s, the team collected three points from each and six in total out of the maximum of 44.

One surprising fact is that Shujaa will be the underdog in the fight owing to their previous results against the three.

Against Tonga Kenya lost by a conversion (24-26) early in January this year while against Uruguay and Canada last weekend the team could only score a try in each match but conceded eight tries in total in a tournament Canada was fighting for the bronze medal that was won by France while Shujaa shrugged off their four straight losses to overcome USA and Japan.

Meanwhile, Nakuru City will be buzzing this weekend with a beehive of activities highlighted by Currie Cup first division’s fixture. pitting Kenya Simbas and Zimbabwe at 4 PM at the Nakuru Athletic Club where the hosts will be entertaining the rugby fraternity through a 2-day Nakuru 10- aside competition.

Kenya Simbas is one of the three continental national teams that are actively taking part in the Currie Cup also known as the Mzansi Challenge and last weekend the Simbas were hoping to end it as a draw against Namibia Welwitschias in Windhoek but the hosts scored the decisive try at the death to seal a 35-28 win.
