Registrar of Sports Rose Wasike wrote to Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) on Tuesday evening urging the union to postpone Wednesday’s elections for two months until all rugby clubs and their affiliates fully comply with the Sports Act.

The union intended to elect new officials to the positions of vice-chairman, honorary secretary, honorary treasurer, and two directors of the union

According to the Registrar, only two out of the 49  affiliates had fully complied.

The KRU chairman Gangla Oduor kicked off the AGM with members unaware of the postponement of the elections. Oduor pointed a finger at the members who soiled the elections by their failure to comply with the Sports Act despite constant reminders from the union.

Together with his secretary Ian Mugambi, the board disclosed that the union was compliant and possessed a valid certificate which allowed the government through the Ministry of Sports to pump in a total of Sh160 million in 2021.

Six other clubs including Homeboyz, Mwamba, Kenya Harlequins, Makueni, Aviators and Vihiga Granites are yet to comply with the Act, while the requirement to register County sports associations in all the 47 counties is far from realization as only Machakos county has been registered.

The positions that were to be contested included the vice chairperson’s position where outgoing Thomas Opiyo left the floor for two directors Moses Ndale and Peris Mukoko to duel while the incumbent secretary, Ian Mugambi was to defend his seat against Ochieng Ahaya. Two directors Oscar Mango and Hillary Itela were to defend their seats against Charles Chege. Honorary secretary Joshua Aroni was running unopposed.
