How Kabras soared high
Kabras rugby 7s team now leads the 16 team standings in style after winning the Prinsloo 7s title to bag their second title in the Sevens Circuit and their third overall medal after overcoming Kenya Harlequins 10-5 at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Sunday.
Coach Felix Ayange charges kicked off their day by nailing the hosts Nakuru 20-5 during the cup quarterfinal before advancing to the cup semifinals where tempers flared against KCB to eliminate them 15-0 while Quins beat Mwamba 19-0 in the quarters before advancing to eliminate the title defending champs Menengai Oilers by two conversions in a nervy 14-10 affair.
For their second consecutive title after they won the Driftwood 7s last month in Mombasa, Kabras lived to their expectations as the favourites to defy last season’s results that had all the 7 titles won by different outfits.
The crucial first half lead was claimed by the Sugar Millers courtesy of a brilliant try by Kenyan international Bryceson Adaka.
Kabras resumed the final period by scoring their second try through Jone Kubu while Kenya Harlequins charges led by coach Paul Murunga and Simon Odongo responded back with unconverted try by Lucky Dewald.
Quins brought in their attacking game in the second half in their first cup final appearance but faced stiff opposition from their opponent who were in their third consecutive cup final.
The tough cup final that had a total of three tries scored and zero conversions wrapped up the two-day rugby sevens competition that included women’s sevens competition won by Yamanashi Impala Saracens after the Ngong road-based ladies shocked Mwamba 10-5 during the cup final.
The Dala 7s champions KCB claimed bronze medal after seeing off Menengai Oilers 22-12 while Mwamba claimed fifth place through a 22-19 win made possible by a penalty goal in an extra time contest against Strathmore Leos. MMUST won the Challenge final thanks to a slim 15-12 in a varsity derby against Daystar Falcons while Kisumu was too strong for Western Bulls in the 13th place final owing to a 41-5 score.
Action shifts to the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) grounds this coming weekend where the hosts Kenya Harlequins will be activated to go one better.
