Homeboyz intensify preparations as club eyes historic league finish

Football Kenya Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz upped their preparations for the final league game of the season, with the club certain to achieve a historic feat in the 2024/25 season.
Francis Baraza’s charges, who are ranked third in the pile, are in line for the best-ever league finish as they wrap up their season travails with a home clash against Tusker FC this Sunday, June 21, 2025, at Mumias Sports Complex.
Third place finish
Homebyz will be assured of a third-place finish behind champions Kenya Police and runners-up Gor Mahia if they force a draw against Tusker who ranked a point below them at fourth with 56 points.
Following their promotion back to the top-flight league in 2016, the club has endured extended spells as a mid-table team with occasional finishes above the drop zone in the past few seasons.

The club, however, mustered a significant change of fortunes in the 2023 season after Coach Patrick Odhiambo inspired them to a maiden title in the top flight, clinching the FKF Shield Cup finals.
Despite Odhiambo’s exit afterwards, the club sustained the progress with Baraza’s arrival, a few games after the campaign kicked off, further steadying the ship.
A particular highlight of the massive strides in the campaign is their nine-game unbeaten streak heading into the last two games of the season.
A 1-0 win over Bidco United in its last league clash saw them stretch the record to ten, placing them as the league’s most in-form team heading to the final rounds of the league.
The club last tasted defeat in March in a 4-goal hiding from Peter Okidi’s Shabana.
Speaking to People Sports regarding the run, coach Paul Okatwa attributed the success to a competitive atmosphere within the club.
“The success in the season has been down to teamwork. If you look at the players within our ranks, you notice that most of them are an average age of 22 years. We have not only created an environment where everyone has an equal chance to prove their case but also one where they can thrive. We also have a good squad depth with players capable of stepping up in case of injuries,” he stated.
The western-based club could also claim the league’s top scorer accolade if Moses Shumah can maintain his slim lead on the season’s best goal scorers.Â
The striker is currently atop the scoring charts with 17 goals, ahead of Emmanuel Osoro of FC Talanta.
The two were recently part of the Harambee Stars team that played back-to-back ties against Chad following their eye-catching display at the club level.
