Sofapaka hat-trick hero Jack Onganya deflected praises from himself, instead opting to credit an overall impressive performance as the key to Sunday, May 18, 2025, league victory over Tusker FC.

The Batoto Ba Mungu playmaker not only dictated proceedings throughout the game but also claimed the most telling statistic by delivering a treble that had Tusker bottle their league charge in the 7-1 humiliation.

Speaking to People Daily Sports after the clash, the midfielder also opened up on his spectacular goal in the 86th minute that ensured he took the match ball home as a hat-trick hero.

“The secret has been the good preparations and the teamwork. You could see from the performance in the 90 minutes that we played as a unit,” he said.

Onganya, a vital component of Ezekiel Akwana’s team and their resurgent streak in the final leg of the season, revealed that he always strives to push himself while on the pitch.

“I always strive to play with confidence and push myself. It paid off today. It is a dream come true to score a hat-trick in the KPL. The goal was down to the belief I always had in myself. I saw the keeper off his goal and decided to go for it,” he added.

On his part, Edward Ondimu, who proved the creator in chief in the clash with the three assists, reiterated the sentiments of his teammate.

“We had enough motivation coming to this clash after losing to Murang’a Seal in the previous clash, so we were psyched up for it and gave it our all. We are grateful that the hard work we have been putting into our training is showing,” Ondimu said.

Rodgers Kipkemboi and Dalvies Wayne provided the other goals that compounded Tusker FC’s worst defeat of the season.

Title race surprises

The Batoto Ba Mungu win was not the only result that threw a spanner in the works in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League race, as Muranga Seal and Mara Sugar also recorded huge wins against title-contending opponents.

In Murang’a, a revitalised Muranga Seal slowed record 21-time champions Gor Mahia from its title defence in a 0-0 draw.

The stalemate meant that K’Ogalo ceded more ground in their quest to retain the league, with Tusker, who beat FC Talanta, moving six points clear.

Mara Sugar stunned Shabana FC in Gusii to see Peter Okidi’s charges lose their fourth place in the league standings to Kakamega Homeboyz.
