WCQ wrap: Morocco, Ivory Coast win, Harambee Stars, Nigeria draw
Harambee Stars and Burundi tightly contested World Cup Qualifiers match in Lilongwe, Malawi ended in a 1-1 draw.
Duke Abuya broke the deadlock for Kenya just after coming on, but Burundi’s Abdallah Sudi equalized in the final minutes.
Harambee Stars fourth draw
This marks the fourth draw in the last 10 meetings between the two teams, with Burundi having scored in nine out of their last ten World Cup qualifiers.
Morocco triumphed over Zambia with a 2-1 win at Agadir Stadium. An early penalty by Hakim Ziyech gave the Atlas Lions an initial lead, which Eliesse Ben Seghir extended in the second half.
Despite a late goal from Zambia’s Edward Chilufya, Morocco maintained their position ahead in Group E.
Cote d’Ivoire emerged victorious with a 1-0 win against Gabon at Stade Amadou Gon Coulibaly. Captain Seko Fofana’s goal ensured the Elephants’ continued dominance in Group F, securing their spot at the top of the standings.
In a thrilling encounter in Uyo, Nigeria and South Africa played to a 1-1 draw. Themba Zwane put Bafana Bafana ahead in the 29th minute, but Fisayo Dele-Bashiru equalized for the Super Eagles just seconds into the second half.
The match, a repeat of their AFCON semi-final clash, saw both teams remain level in Group C.
In another match, Angola secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Eswatini at November 11 Stadium in Luanda. Mabulu’s early goal in the 2nd minute was enough to give Angola the win, placing them as the runners-up in Group D behind Libya.
Other winners
Madagascar climbed to the top of Group I with a 2-0 win over Comoros. Rayan Raveloson’s brace revitalized the Malagasy’s qualifying campaign, propelling them from second-to-last to first place in the group standings.
Uganda defeated Botswana 1-0, thanks to a late goal from Muhammad Shaban in the 74th minute. This victory brings Uganda closer to the top two positions in Group G, currently held by Algeria and Guinea, marking their second win in the qualifying campaign.
