Harambee Stars defender Daniel Sakari has spoken out on the influential figure of coach Benni McCarthy, terming it key to the improved confidence levels in the ongoing African Nations Championship.

Speaking during Kenya’s pre-match conference against Zambia on Saturday, August 16, 2025, Sakari shared his connection with the coach, revealing that he always refers to him as Baba, a Swahili term for father.

The fullback stressed that the former Manchester United coach’s record, both as a player and tactician, has been an inspiration to the team.

Belief

“For me, I call him Baba at the helm. We know what he has achieved as a player and as a coach too. With him at the helm, we have the belief that you can come from Africa and make it even in the big league out there,” he stated.

He further added that national team players have since continued the coach’s remarkable feat as a result of his close association with the players.

“The team always fights for him, as we want him to maintain his legacy,” he stated.

Meanwhile, speaking ahead of Kenya’s crucial final group clash against Zambia, McCarthy reiterated the need for yet another impressive performance as Kenya looks to end the group phases on a high.

Must-win game

“Tomorrow is a must-win game; we know that we have already qualified, but we are just looking to finish off the good campaign so that we prove it all has been a fluke,” he stated.

McCarthy also spoke highly of his team’s overall performance, coming from a tough group that few expected Harambee Stars to make it through as the tournament kicked off a fortnight ago.

“Everyone said it is a group of death, and we probably would be on zero points after four games, but we found ourselves on top, and we now have to enjoy it and make it better,” the coach stated while reflecting on the team’s run.

“I always say to the players, in order to be the best, you have to beat the best, and we have proven that in the group stages with DRC, Angola, and Morocco. The three most dangerous teams with strong squads. It takes immense credit to players, but now we have to make a strong statement by winning the last game,” he stated.

A win against Zambia is likely to prove crucial for Kenya’s prospects of drawing a manageable opponent in the next phase. Victory will not only assure the team of a top spot in Group A but also see Kenya retain the advantage of hosting the next phase of the games at Kasarani.
