Grimsby Town fined for fielding ineligible Kenyan player against Man United
Grimsby Town have been fined Ksh3,456,242 by the English Football League (EFL) for fielding an ineligible Kenyan winger, Clarke Oduor, during their memorable Carabao Cup Round Two clash against Manchester United on 27 August 2025.
Of the fine, Ksh1,728,121 has been suspended until the end of the 2025/26 season.
The EFL confirmed that the breach occurred because Oduor’s registration was submitted at 12:01 pm on the day before the fixture, just one minute past the 12:00 pm deadline.
Despite this, Grimsby Town self-reported the error the following day, prompting the EFL to take a lenient stance given the club’s transparency and lack of intent to deceive. The suspended portion of the fine will only be enforced if the Mariners field an ineligible player in any League Competition before the end of next season.

Grimsby Town acknowledged the ruling in a club statement, citing technical difficulties with their registration system as the reason for the delay.
“We accept the fine imposed and fully recognise the importance of adhering to competition rules and regulations. This mistake was not deliberate, and the club acted transparently by self-reporting the breach as soon as it came to light,” the statement read.
The club added that it has since reviewed its internal processes and implemented stronger measures to prevent similar issues in the future.
Oduor joined Grimsby Town on a season-long loan from Bradford City ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. The versatile Kenyan midfielder began his professional career at Leeds United, making his first-team debut in 2017, before spells at Barnsley and a loan at Hartlepool United.
Oduor played a key role in Bradford City’s promotion from Sky Bet League Two last season and brings both Championship experience and international exposure, having made an appearance for the Kenyan national team, to David Artell’s squad.
Historic triumph
The breach, however, does little to overshadow the historic night at Blundell Park, where Grimsby stunned Manchester United in one of the club’s greatest-ever Carabao Cup performances. The Mariners raced into a 2-0 lead in the first half through Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, only for United to stage a dramatic comeback, with Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire levelling the score at 2-2.

After an extraordinary penalty shootout that extended to 12-11, Grimsby emerged victorious, setting up a Round Three tie against Sheffield Wednesday. Clarke Oduor made his debut in that fixture, coming off the bench as Grimsby defended their lead.
Grimsby Town head coach David Artell reflected on the team’s performance, praising the players’ resilience and character. While the fine serves as a cautionary reminder about regulatory compliance, the focus remains on league preparations and continuing the club’s positive momentum following one of the most celebrated nights in Blundell Park’s 126-year history.
