Govt resumes Kipchoge Keino Stadium construction ahead of AFCON 2027
The government has resumed the upgrade of Eldoret’s iconic Kipchoge Keino Stadium as part of Kenya’s wider preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the modernisation of the facility is central to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which identifies sports and talent development as key drivers of youth empowerment and economic growth.
The works currently underway include formwork for terraces, construction of columns, and the development of the boundary wall, all geared towards transforming the stadium into a modern sports complex that meets both national and international standards.
“Investment in youth and talent development is a central pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), with the government prioritising modern sports infrastructure as a driver of opportunity and growth,” Omollo stated.
“It is through such efforts that Kenya is successfully co-hosting the CHAN 2024 tournament and is now preparing to jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). In line with this vision, the iconic Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret is undergoing a major upgrade to meet the standards of both national and international competitions.”

Elite training ground
Named after Olympic legend Kipchoge Keino, the stadium holds a special place in Kenya’s athletics history and continues to serve as a training ground for elite and upcoming athletes.
Eldoret’s reputation as a global high-altitude hub for long-distance running makes the facility even more strategic in nurturing talent.
“Named after the legendary Olympian Kipchoge Keino, the facility is a landmark of Kenya’s athletic heritage and a vital training ground for elite and upcoming athletes, particularly given Eldoret’s global reputation as a high-altitude hub for long-distance running,” Omollo wrote on X.
“The ongoing works include formwork for terraces, construction of columns, and development of the boundary wall, all aimed at transforming the stadium into a world-class facility. Once complete, the facility will provide a platform for nurturing sporting talent and enhance Eldoret’s standing as a centre of excellence in athletics and other disciplines,” he added.
The stadium is among several sports infrastructure projects being prioritised by the government, with the aim of positioning Kenya as a regional hub for athletics, football, and other disciplines while creating opportunities for the youth.
