Gor Mahia goalkeeper Gad Mathews is set to be flown to Nairobi for further treatment after falling ill in Mombasa on Friday morning. The illness forced him to miss the ODM@20 final against Bandari at Mbaraki Stadium, which Gor Mahia went on to win 1-0.

According to team doctor Brian Odongo, Mathews began complaining of severe abdominal pain in the morning before his condition worsened during the day. The medical team decided to rush him to a nearby hospital in Mombasa for urgent tests and treatment.

“On the morning of Friday, Gad Mathews experienced abdominal pain that gradually worsened over time. Due to the increasing severity of the pain, he was taken to the hospital where he has been admitted for further investigations and treatment,” Odongo said.

The goalkeeper remained under close observation overnight. Doctors later advised that he should avoid a long train journey back to Nairobi with the rest of the squad. The team is expected to travel this afternoon on the 3pm train, while Mathews will take a flight once he is cleared for discharge.

Team captain Philemon Otieno and a second team doctor, Joash Odhiambo, have stayed behind in Mombasa to help with the discharge process and ensure Mathews travels safely.

Club assures his stability

Sources within the club medical team said the illness was not life-threatening, but further tests in Nairobi are necessary to identify the cause of the pain.

‘He is stable and responding well to treatment, but we want to make sure he gets proper follow-up in Nairobi,” one official said.

Mathews has been a key figure for Gor Mahia this season, playing a crucial role in their recent matches and maintaining several clean sheets. His absence was felt during the ODM@20 final, but the team managed to secure the title thanks to a second-half goal from Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw.

In a statement, Gor Mahia thanked the medical team and wished Mathews a quick recovery.

“The entire Gor Mahia family wishes Gad a swift and full recovery. We look forward to seeing him back in training soon,” the club said.

The team will resume preparations next week ahead of their upcoming league fixtures, hoping their first-choice goalkeeper returns to full fitness in time for the next round of matches.
