Gor Mahia see off Shabana amid chaos at Gusii Stadium that left 72 injured

Gor Mahia managed to secure a 1-0 Football Kenya Federation Premier League win over Shabana amid chaos at Gusii Stadium on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Sylvester Owino scored the only goal that separated the bitter opponents in a game that was delayed to kick off due to uncertainty and chaos.
After the match, FKF released a statement condemning the incident and giving an update on the number of casualties.
“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is deeply concerned by the unfortunate scenes of violence that occurred during today’s FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia FC at Gusii Stadium.
“We have received confirmed reports from Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, RAM Hospital, Hema Hospital, Christamarianne Hospital, and the police, indicating that a total of 72 individuals were treated for injuries. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported as of this evening.
“FKF strongly condemns all forms of violence in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together – not one that puts lives at risk. The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remains a top priority for the Federation,” FKF said.
The federation has promised to take decisive action against the culprits once the investigation is complete.
“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations.
“We urge members of the public and the media to refrain from circulating unverified reports, particularly claims of fatalities,” it added.

The FA said it is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide timely updates to the public should any new developments arise.
