Gor Mahia beat AFC Leopards to lift Madaraka Day trophy
The Madaraka day celebrations came to an all time high when Gor Mahia were crowned cup champions after beating AFC Leopards in a classic mashemeji derby friendly.
The two FKF Kenyan Premier League giants came to a stale mate that saw them into extra time after a goal a piece.
The match which was staged at Nyayo National Stadium at exactly 3P.M on June 1 saw AFC Leopards draw the first blood before the half-time whistle.
Collins Shivachi of Leopards managed to score the goal that sent the crowd to a frenzy. Keeper Collins marked the end of the heated half with outstanding saves that had Leopards cruise well through into the second-half.
Gor Mahia’s stellar midfielder Austin Odhiambo scored the winning goal right after keeper Levis Opiyo’s error that led to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Both teams scored their first five kicks and the game had to go to sudden death. Skipper Peter Thiong’o skied his effort and Odhiambo responded, sending the ball straight through the middle for the winner. For winning the Cup, Gor took home Ksh 1M while AFC Leopards went home with Ksh 500,000.
