The 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations have turned Wajir Stadium into a sea of humanity as thousands of residents fill the newly developed facility to capacity, marking a historic moment in the Northern Frontier.

The celebrations, being held in Wajir for the first time since independence, have attracted high-level national and county leaders who continue to stream into the packed venue ahead of the official programme.

Stadium hits full capacity

From early morning, residents poured into the 10,000-seater modern stadium, waving flags, singing patriotic songs, and eagerly waiting for the national event. Security and event officials have been working to manage the growing crowds as every section of the stadium filled up.

The stadium, constructed at a cost of about Ksh900 million, was fast-tracked by the government specifically to host the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations, following President William Ruto’s announcement earlier in the year that Wajir would host the national event.

The facility has since become the centrepiece of the celebrations, symbolising what officials describe as balanced national development and inclusion of historically marginalised regions.

Leaders stream in as Wajir makes history

Inside the fully packed stadium, several leaders had already taken their seats as more dignitaries continued to arrive.

Among those present are Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi; Principal Secretary, State Department for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, and Uasin Gishu County Senator Jackson Mandago, alongside other national government officials and county leaders.

PS Mwangi noted that the stadium is not only meant for the celebrations but also as a long-term investment in nurturing talent in sports such as football, athletics, volleyball and rugby.

Senator Mandago praised the coordination between the national government and Wajir County, saying the successful hosting of Madaraka Day reflects the strength of devolution and unity.

Historic national moment for Wajir

The 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir are expected to feature speeches from top national leaders, with the packed stadium setting the stage for a symbolic national moment highlighting unity, development, and inclusion across all regions of Kenya.
