Jubilee Deputy Party Leader and 2027 presidential flag bearer Fred Matiang’i has called on Kenyans to renew their commitment to national unity, dignity, and prosperity as the country marks Madaraka Day celebrations.

In a message shared via his official X account on Monday, June 1, 2026, the former interior cabinet secretary said the spirit of Madaraka Day should serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Kenya’s independence pioneers and the responsibility placed on current generations to safeguard and expand those gains.

Honouring the struggle for freedom

Matiang’i noted that Madaraka Day remains a symbol of Kenya’s hard-won self-rule and the courage of those who fought for independence.

“On this Madaraka Day, we honour the sacrifices of those who secured our freedom and reaffirm our commitment to building a stronger, more united, and more prosperous Kenya,” Matiang’i stated.

He emphasised that the legacy of independence must not only be remembered but also actively protected through responsible leadership and collective national effort.

Call for unity

The former CS urged Kenyans to prioritise unity and cooperation, warning that the country’s future depends on the choices made today.

He called for collaboration across political, social, and economic divides to ensure that Kenya remains stable and progressive.

Matiang’i further stressed the need to expand opportunity and restore hope for millions of Kenyans, particularly the youth facing economic challenges.

“The future of our nation rests not only on the legacy we inherited, but on the choices we make today. Let us work together to restore hope, expand opportunity, and ensure dignity for every Kenyan. Happy Madaraka Day,” he stated.

Madaraka Day celebrations

Madaraka Day, celebrated annually on June 1, marks Kenya’s attainment of self-rule in 1963, a key milestone in the country’s journey toward full independence.

This year’s celebrations have been hosted in Wajir, marking the first time a national holiday is being commemorated in the Northern Frontier.

The theme for the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations is “Education, Skills and the Future.”

To Wajir residents, the honour of hosting the Madarka Day fete has come with goodies. Major developments in the county include the construction of Wajir International Stadium, the expansion of Wajir International Airport, the upgrading of municipal roads, and the installation of street lighting.
