Gor Mahia coach Akonnor convenes team meeting ahead of new season

In a statement seen by People Daily, the FKF Premier League giants have officially ushered in a new chapter under the tutelage of the Ghanaian tactician. The development unfolds as the club seeks to rebuild and bounce back from a challenging season.
Gor Mahia beef up technical department
Earlir, Gor Mahia expressed confidence in Akonnor’s leadership, highlighting his impressive background both on the pitch and on the touchline.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach on a two-year contract effective today. The former Ghana Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience, both as a top-level player and a seasoned tactician, making him the ideal leader to guide us into a new era of success. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor.” Gor Mahia said.
Akonnor, a former player of the Ghana national team and ex-head coach of the Black Stars, has coached several top-flight clubs in Ghana and West Africa. Joining Akonnor in the technical set-up is fellow Ghanaian Kobi-Mensah Bismark, who will serve as Assistant Coach.
Gor Mahia have also made significant additions to their backroom staff, unveiling Brian Odongo as the new Team Doctor. Odongo brings vast experience in sports medicine and has worked with elite athletes both in Kenya and abroad.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Brian Odongo as our new Team Doctor. Brian is a certified sports medicine specialist with extensive experience working with elite athletes across multiple disciplines – both locally and internationally.” K’Ogalo said in a statement.
Additionally, the club confirmed the appointment of Ben Owu, also from Ghana, as the new Goalkeeper Coach. “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ben Owu from Ghana as goalkeeper coach.”
Coach Akonnor has officially commenced preparations for pre-season with Gor Mahia. With new technical reinforcements in place, the perennial league champions hope to reset their ambitions and deliver silverware in the upcoming campaign. The side recorded a difficult 2024/25, where they lost the league title to Police FC and the FKF Cup to Nairobi United, denying them a chance for continental football next season.
