How Gor Mahia beat AFC Leopards to land highly-rated forward
Football Kenya Federation Premier League giants Gor Mahia completed the signing of Mark Shaban who had been training with AFC Leopards.
Shaban, in a video that trended online, was seen being driven around by AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda, and Ingwe’s fans were hopeful of seeing the highly-rated forward feature for their team.
However, Gor Mahia confirmed him as their third signing on Monday night, intensifying the rivalry between Kenya’s famous clubs. The teenager had also trained with AFC Leopards last month before the current transfer window opened, increasing hopes that he would finally be with the 12-time Premier League champions for long.
Meanwhile, the new Gor Mahia signing honed his skills with the famed Green Commandos of Kakamega High School in the 2022/23 season and was Zone B’s fourth scorer after finding the net nine times.
However, in last year’s school games, he featured for Shanderema and was part of the reason why the school shone and finished third.
Gor Mahia siginings
Shaban becomes the third signing for the league leaders – and defending champions – after the completion of Enock Wanyama and Shariff Musa’s deals.
Musa signed from Premier League side Bidco United, where he had scored three goals in his six-month stint. His arrival, together with Shaban’s, is expected to add firepower to the attacking department.
The department already has Benson Omala, last season’s club top scorer, who is currently leading the Golden Boot race; Patrick Kaddu; Boniface Omondi; and Patrick Sibomana, who have all enjoyed a fairly big presence in the starting lineups.
Before Musa joined Gor Mahia, he had been linked with Premier League sides Bandari and Kenya Police.
In recent seasons, Police have been Gor Mahia’s big rivals in the transfer market, and before the current term began, they tussled over Tyson Otieno, who eventually chose the Cops over K’Ogalo.
