Goalkeeper Patrick Matasi joins Kakamega side after parting ways with league leaders Police FC

Kenya national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi has found a new home at Kakamega Homeboyz after leaving Kenya Police FC. The veteran shot-stopper, who struggled for game time at Police due to inconsistent performances, now has a chance to revive his career with the FKF Premier League outfit.
Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula confirmed Matasi’s signing on a two-year deal, expressing confidence that the experienced custodian can rediscover his form and help the club push for league and cup glory.
“We have sealed the signing of Patrick (Matasi) after he agreed to join us on a two-year contract following his departure from Police,” Shimanyula told Flashscore.
“We know he has not been performing at his best level at his former club, but I always believe players deserve another chance to prove themselves.
“He has promised to give his best. Players go through periods of poor form, but that does not mean they should be written off. That is why I have decided to give Matasi another opportunity to shine here at Homeboyz.”
Shimanyula continued: “Our main target remains to win the FKF Premier League title and the domestic cup at the end of the season. Matasi has assured us that he will do his best to help us achieve our goals.”
The Homeboyz boss also confirmed that Matasi is the club’s first signing of the current transfer window, with plans to bring in four to five more players in key positions as per the technical bench’s request.
Matasi’s predicaments began last year when former Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat dropped him from the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Namibia.
During the Group J fixtures, Kenya drew 1-1 against Zimbabwe’s Warriors and 0-0 against Namibia’s Brave Warriors. Before these matches, Firat had also excluded Matasi from the squad for the two-legged 2024 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) qualifiers against South Sudan.
Although Kenya had already qualified for CHAN as co-hosts, they failed to beat South Sudan, losing the first leg 2-0 in Juba before a 1-1 draw in the return leg saw the Bright Stars progress with a 3-1 aggregate win.
Matasi’s arrival at Homeboyz coincides with the club’s announcement that its sponsor, leading gaming firm Mozzartbet Kenya Limited, has renewed its partnership for another year.
Homeboyz first partnered with Mozzartbet Kenya on December 29, 2020, with an initial three-year deal. The renewal marks the fifth year of collaboration between the two parties.
Shimanyula expressed his delight at the continued partnership and backed Homeboyz to challenge for the league title.
