Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Monday, July 27, 2026, held high-level talks with Acting United States Ambassador to Kenya Susan Burns.

The meeting comes as the opposition figure continues to ramp up his political engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a brief statement shared via his official X account on Monday, July 27, 2026, after the meeting, the Jubilee Deputy Party leader said the discussions focused on Kenya’s development agenda and the aspirations of its people.

“This afternoon, I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Susan Burns, Acting U.S. Ambassador to Kenya. We held discussions on a wide range of issues concerning Kenya’s development and the aspirations of our people. I appreciate her valuable insights and the opportunity to exchange perspectives,” Matiang’i said.

Meeting comes amid growing political profile

The meeting is the latest in a series of high-profile engagements involving Matiang’i, who has increasingly emerged as one of the key figures within the opposition’s United Alternative Government coalition.

Earlier this month, Matiang’i hosted former United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Dr. Jendayi Frazer for discussions on Kenya’s political and economic future before later meeting Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as opposition leaders stepped up coordination efforts.

He has also recently held strategy meetings with leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, signalling closer cooperation among opposition formations seeking to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

Susan Burns leading US mission

Burns currently serves as Acting Head of Mission at the United States Embassy in Nairobi following the departure of previous American ambassadors and pending confirmation of a substantive envoy.

Her tenure comes as Washington and Nairobi continue expanding cooperation in trade, regional security, health, climate resilience and democratic governance.

Last month, United States President Donald Trump nominated veteran diplomat Henry Wooster to become the next US Ambassador to Kenya, subject to confirmation by the US Senate. Until then, Burns continues overseeing day-to-day diplomatic operations at the embassy.
