Gachagua consoles Harambee Stars after CHAN quarter-final loss to Madagascar
By Mustafa Juma, August 22, 2025Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sent a message of encouragement to the Harambee Stars following their exit from the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament after a hard-fought quarter-final clash against Madagascar.
Kenya’s journey at the continental competition came to an end on Friday, August 22, 2025, after a narrow defeat to Madagascar in the penalty shootout, a match that kept fans across the country on edge until the final whistle at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Despite the disappointment, Gachagua, in a message shared via his official X account on Friday, August 22, 2025, hailed the team’s resilience and determination, urging them to remain proud of their achievements.
“Our Stars, we’ve got your back. We stand with you every step of the way. You fought with spirit and determination to elevate Kenya’s football to new heights, pushing through to the CHAN quarter-finals. Your resilience and passion inspire us all. Keep shining and making us proud!” Gachagua stated.

Kenya kicked out
Kenya’s push for a semifinal spot in only their debut appearance seemed on course after taking an early lead through Alphonce Omija’s opener.
The advantage was, however, cut short after Madagascar equalised after the hour mark, sending the clash to extra time.
The hard-fighting Islanders finally upended Benni McCarthy’s team after regulation time in a tense lottery of penalty kicks, winning 4-3 to advance to the last four.
The heartbreak compounded a teary and disappointing end for the Stars, who not only ended their continental journey but also missed out on the bountiful rewards of Ksh1 million each for every player pledged by President William Ruto for a victory in the quarterfinal tie.
Two-bedroom promise
The players had also been promised a two-bedroom affordable housing unit each for progressing past the knockout stages.
Harambee Stars’ quarter-final berth marked their best performance in recent years at a major continental tournament, reigniting hope among fans and showcasing Kenya’s growing potential in regional football.
The team had displayed consistency in the group stages, overcoming stiff competition to secure a knockout slot.
Gachagua hailed the Harambee Stars and wished them success against Madagascar.
“It’s Football O’clock. Hail Harambee Stars,” Gachagua said, as he posed in a white jersey of the national team.
