Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed joined family, friends, and stakeholders in Soy, Uasin Gishu County, to pay their last respects to Mama Mildred Wanyama.

“Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed led stakeholders in honouring the life of Mama Mildred Wanyama during her burial in Soy,” FKF posted on their X account on Saturday, July 5, 2025.

The burial ceremony was a heartfelt moment, celebrating the life of a woman who touched many hearts, including those of her famous sons, footballer Victor Wanyama and his brother McDonald Mariga. Mama Mildred, the matriarch of the Wanyama family, passed away due to heart-related complications, as shared by her husband, Noah Wanyama.

Emotional farewell to beloved matriarch

Her death followed a minor leg injury that led to her hospitalisation. Noah, a father of 16, spoke fondly of his wife, recalling their love story that began in 1980. Both were sports lovers, he played football, and she played netball.

The Wanyama family airlifted Mama Mildred’s body from Nairobi to their village in Soy a day before the burial. A touching video showed Victor and McDonald, dressed in black suits, carrying their mother’s casket from the airplane to a hearse at Matulo Airstrip.

A heartbreaking photo also surfaced of Victor sitting quietly next to his mother’s casket, with his wife, Serah Teshna, by his side. Serah shared her support for Victor during this difficult time, promising to stand by him through the grief.

The ceremony drew many who admired Mama Mildred’s impact. Social media was filled with condolences, with people sending love and prayers to the family. The outpouring of support showed how much she meant to the community.

Her sons’ success in football, especially Victor’s global career, was a testament to her strength and guidance. The burial was a farewell and a celebration of a life well-lived.
