FKF demotes referee after match footage review
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF), through its National Referees Committee, has completed a performance review of match officials who handled selected Premier League fixtures.
The review followed concerns over key decisions made during recent matches in the top tier of Kenyan football.
FKF confirmed that the assessment took place during a virtual meeting of the FKF Instructors Technical Group held on December 10, 2025. The panel reviewed match footage, official match reports and written explanations from the referees involved.
The process formed part of FKF’s wider effort to maintain integrity, consistency and acceptable standards of officiating across domestic competitions.
One of the main cases involved FIFA-listed referee Erick Njogu. The committee assessed his performance in Match No. 56 between Kariobangi Sharks and Shabana FC, as well as Match No. 94 featuring Nairobi United against Mathare United.
After analysing the footage and reports, the committee found that several of his key decisions did not meet the standards expected of a referee at the Premier League and FIFA level.
As a corrective step, FKF has demoted Njogu to officiate National Super League (NSL) matches for the next five rounds. The federation stated that this decision aims to support development rather than punish the official.
“As a corrective and developmental measure, Mr Njogu will be demoted to officiate National Super League (NSL) matches for the next five (5) rounds. His performance will be closely monitored, with evaluation reports submitted to determine readiness for reinstatement to the Premier League panel,” FKF said.

Assistant referee warned
The committee also reviewed the work of assistant referee Fredrick Kajongo during Match No. 90 between Kenya Police FC and Mathare United. The panel identified an incorrect offside decision that affected the flow of the game.
As a result, Kajongo received a formal written warning. FKF said it expects improved decision-making in future matches and will keep his assignments under close observation.
FKF reiterated that referee assessments remain a continuous process within Kenyan football. The federation stressed that accountability applies to all officials, regardless of rank or experience.
By reviewing performances and taking action where standards fall short, FKF aims to improve confidence in match officiating and protect the credibility of the SportPesa Premier League.
The federation added that referee development remains a priority as Kenyan football continues to grow, with consistent officiating seen as key to fair competition and professionalism across all leagues.
