Kenya’s impressive run in the Singapore 7s came to an end after falling 21-12 to Fiji in the final played on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

The Shujaa had a dream of ending the Singapore campaign on a high even though their fate had already been sealed; the relegation playoff is looming in May for the East Africans.

Meanwhile, Fiji faced an early setback when Sevuloni Mocenacagi was yellow carded, an advantage that Shujaa’s capitalised on. Kenya grabbed a 7-0 lead when Nygel Amaitsa kicked and raced through to score just before halftime.

As the second half started, Fiji fought back as Viwa Naduvalo crossed over for a converted try to level the match at 7-7. Naduvalo struck again off a scrum and made his way past the Shujaa’s defence to score under the posts, handing Fiji a 14-7 lead.

Fiji extended their lead to 21-7 through Rauto Vakdradranu before Kenya dared to fight back. Facing his country of birth, Jone Kubu linked up with William Mwanji, who touched down to reduce the deficit to 21-12.

Eventually, Shujaa finished the campaign ninth overall in the World 7s Series standings.

Impressive run

Before facing Fiji in the final, Kenya won over Ireland and France in the group stages and edged out Spain 12-5 in the semifinals. On the other hand, Fiji were also impressive as they saw off World 7s Series champions Argentina in a high-scoring 33-24 semifinal clash.
