World football governing body FIFA’s Senior Governance Services Manager, Sarah Solemale from France, yesterday addressed the general situation of African Football at the Africa Football Business Summit 2023 in Weston Hotel, Nairobi County.

The summit, attended by several football stake holders, discussed the challenges African football has faced in the past, including allegations of corruption and match-fixing. However, Solemale promised the summit attendees that FIFA was actively working with African associations to establish a robust systems that prevents corruption and promotes ethical behavior in the sport.

According to Solemale, strong leadership is indispensable for the growth of football in Africa. She underscored the significance of visionary leaders who prioritize the development of the sport at all levels.
“Effective leadership means not only making strategic decisions but also nurturing talent and promoting inclusivity,” she said.

Solemale emphasized on the need for better relations between football federations and their governance and also called for the promotion of sports diplomacy collaboration and partnerships in Africa.
With over 10 years of experience at FIFA, the international governing body of football, she said that governance was the framework that ensures football runs smoothly.

Solemale reiterated FIFA’s commitment to helping African football associations establish solid governance structures that encompass financial management, rules and regulations, and ensuring that every decision is made in the best interest of the game.

“Most of my field actions were in Africa, and over the years, I have realized that there might be some progress to be made. Through mentorship and collaboration, FIFA is helping African nations build sustainable football infrastructures that will support the sport’s growth for generations to come,” she said.
According to her, FIFA’s role in nurturing leadership includes providing training and education programs for administrators, coaches, and referees across the continent. By investing in leadership development, African football can aim higher and achieve greater heights.
