Faith Kipyegon goes for a double in Budapest

An epic showdown is expected tomorrow under the lights in Budapest as team Kenya intensifies its scramble for global athletics excellence with three gold medals available for snatching.

Faith Kipyegon will once again line up for yet another career test as she sets her eyes on a second gold medal of this championship, having already bagged one in women’s 1,500m, her traditional event.

The superb homegirl who has gained the status of “Greatest of All time” in women’s 1,500m running is anticipated to lead a contingent of three other Kenyans in the final of 5,000m, matching into the race with bragging rights of the world record she smashed last month in Paris.

World silver medalist (2022) Beatrice Chebet, who is in great shape at the moment, will be part of the four Kenyans in the event to propel the medal hunt with the championships set for Sunday’s conclusion.

Lilian Kasait who won a bronze medal at the African games in 2019 and former world silver medalist Margaret Chelimo will be part of the team in the final, all eying for a podium finish.

Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru is hopeful of giving a good show in her debut at the world championships marathon.

The gallant Wanjiru has the world lead this year in women’s outdoor marathon after clocking 2:16:28 in March to win the Tokyo Marathon. In her first full marathon attempt, she managed a second position finish on the Streets of Berlin last year in a time of 2:18.00. That fete makes the ever-jovial long-distance runner a clear favourite to strike home the gold.

A fierce battle awaits global athletics enthusiasts from gun to tape with Kenyans poised to go neck to neck with perennial neighbours and rivals Ethiopia who have the World Champion  Gotytom Gebreslase on the start line.

Apart from Rosemary Wanjiru, Kenya’s women marathon team has also Sally Chepngeno,Shyline Jepkoris, Betty Chepkwony and Margaret Wangari.

Ruth Chepngetich won a gold medal in the 2019 edition of the championships in Doha,Qatar but the effort to defend the medal was unsuccessful last year in Oregon with Gabreslase touching the tape in 2:18:11 ahead of Kenya’s Judy Korir who took silver and Lonah Salpeter.

Ambitious teenager Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Alex Ngeno are also in Kenya’s medal prospects tomorrow should they qualify for men’s 800m  final slated for 9:30 PM.

Former world javelin champion Julius Yego will be in action today in group A of the qualifiers. Sensational Mary Moraa also will seek a final qualification in 800m today evening. She is the only Kenya in the race following the elimination of Vivian Chebet and Naomi Korir.
