Former Gor Mahia national treasurer Sally Bolo has claimed that the Football Kenya Federation Premier League giants’ standards have gone down.

While reacting to Tanzania’s Yanga SC’s advance in the CAF Champions League campaign, Bolo looked back at when K’Ogalo were at their prime and could not be intimidated by regional opponents.

To her, Yanga’s progress evokes a bitter feeling since the Tanzanian giants will represent the CECAFA region while Gor Mahia are not taking part in the continental campaign.

“Congratulations to the Young Africans for advancing to the quarterfinals with a game to spare, representing the CECAFA region admirably.

“As someone who supports teams from our region, it’s bittersweet to witness their success. However, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the days when we dominated encounters against Yanga, triumphing home and away during CAF Confederation Cup group stage matches in 2018,” Bolo said in a post on his social media pages.

The national official looked back at when Gor Mahia were a force to be reckoned with and said they should not be fooled by the fact that they are still dominant in the local football scene.

“In 2019, we beat the North African giants like Zamalek at home, and we qualified for the Confederation Cup quarterfinals for the first time in the club’s history!

“Yet, I must express concern over the current state of our beloved club. While we may sit atop the table, there’s a palpable sense that our standards have slipped,” she added.

Regaining position

She urged the club to fight hard and get their position as one of the big clubs in Africa back.

“Our identity seems blurred, and our style of play lacks the trademark Gor Mahia flair. It’s imperative that we wake up and reclaim our essence before the gap widens further.

“We have no choice but to strive for excellence and restore Gor Mahia to its rightful place among football giants,” Bolo concluded.

After they were eliminated from the FKF Cup by Denmark FC, K’Ogalo have been left fighting only for the Premier League title.
