Former Harambee Stars captain Musa Otieno has credited the national team’s spirited win in their African Nations Championship (CHAN) opener to the overwhelming support from Kenyan fans.

Speaking on a local media station on August 4, 2025, following Harambee Stars’ 1-0 win over DR Congo, Otieno highlighted the significance of the victory for both the team and the nation.

“It was a very big day for us as Kenyans and also for the boys because it wasn’t easy for them. Mentally, it’s the first match, and it’s a CHAN match,” Otieno said.

The former captain emphasised how the players overcame the pressure of the tournament opener, describing their mental resilience as a victory in itself.

“They really pushed themselves, and that’s a win in itself because in a competition, the first match is very important and the boys have won, and they’re already thinking about the next game,” he said.

Fans’ support

According to Otieno, the team’s performance has generated renewed interest among supporters, creating a positive cycle of encouragement between fans and players.

This, he says, plays a huge role in lifting the team’s spirits and fueling their performance.

“They’ve inspired people, and I think now everyone wants to come to the stadium because the team is playing well. And when the boys see that everyone is cheering, they also feel encouraged,” he added.

Morale booster

The former skipper further remarked that the win had ignited nationwide morale and a sense of renewed pride in the national team.

“I think there’s morale now, among all Kenyans. I’m proud and I say, kudos to the boys,” he reiterated.

His comments echoed those of Harambee Stars midfielder Austin Odhiambo, who scored Kenya’s winning goal and initiated Stars’ CHAN 2024 campaign in style.

Speaking shortly after the match on Sunday, August 3, 2025, Austin credited the victory as a major morale booster for the team as they prepare for the upcoming fixtures.

“I am happy, we are happy that we won today, and it has given us morale because the first game was very important. We are looking forward to the game on Thursday because we have a long way to go. This is motivation; it has given us the morale we need for the next game,” he said.
