Daniel Ebenyo: World silver medallist begs for Olympic Games’ slot
World 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu Ebenyo has pleaded to be given a slot in the Kenyan team that will head to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games.
Ebenyo finished eighth in the 10,000m at the Prefontaine Classic, which Athletics Kenya used as trials for the summer Games.
The world half marathon silver medallist explained why he struggled and celebrated his rivals who earned Olympic Games tickets in Eugene.
“I just felt like I was tired, but my manager told me to just go and run because I arrived late, but I’m happy I competed, and those took the first three slots. I’m happy for them, and I wish them all the best in Paris. I wish I could have come earlier,” Ebenyo told the press.
Simiu said he is very hungry for a medal in the Olympic Games medal and asked the Athletics Kenya to consider him.
“I think it’s good, and I think that’s my prayer that, despite me arriving late, I’m praying to God that they consider me in Paris because I’m hungry for that medal.
“It was stressful, but I thank God that I made it because it wasn’t my fault… I arrived late, and I had to race for like 18 hours to the game. It’s like the body was still tired, but I’m happy I finished,” he added.
Tripped
Ebenyo said he tripped and almost quit, only for him to keep fighting till the end.
“I was just in the middle, and when I tried to change lanes, I tripped. However, now I feel okay. I wanted to drop out, but I remembered that I needed to work hard because no one would do that for me,” the Berlin Half Marathon champion said.
The 10000m was crowded with Peter Mwaniki Aila, Kibiwott Kandie, Nicholas Kipkorir, Benson Kiplang’at, Bernard Koech, Francis Koumwa, Edwin Kurgat, Ronald Kwemoi, Weldon Langat, Samuel Chebolei Masai, Daniel Mateiko, Stanley Waithaka Mburu, and Gideon Kipkertich Rono.
Mateiko and Kimeli claimed the first and second positions, and Ebenyo hopes to join them on the list as the third man.
