Coastal test awaits Africa’s best as Sunshine Tour tees off in Nyali
Field of 87 golfers from eight African countries will descend on the Nyali Golf & Country Club in Mombasa from August 4-6, 2025, for the third leg of the Sunshine Development Tour-East Africa Swing, where a Ksh2 million prize purse and vital world ranking points await.
The 54-hole contest featuring Kenya’s top professionals and elite amateurs alongside players from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, Malawi, Ghana and Zimbabwe will see the field cut to the top 30 and ties after two rounds, setting up a tense final day on the coast’s wind-swept fairways.
Kenya’s Dismas Indiza, winner of the Ruiru leg and current Order of Merit leader, is among the favourites to lift the trophy.
“Nyali is always a test of ball control, especially with the wind,” said Indiza.
“My goal remains the same… stay consistent and focused.”
He will be joined by Thika Greens leg champion Njoroge Kibugu and leading amateur John Lejirma, who narrowly missed out in Ruiru and is currently third in the standings.
“Ruiru taught me a lot,” said Lejirma, adding, “Heading into Nyali, I feel sharper mentally and physically, and this tour gives us a real shot at world ranking points.”
Tanzania’s challenge includes Nuru Mollel, Isaac Wanyeche and Abdalla Yusuf, while Uganda fields Hussein Bagalana and Ronald Rugumayo.
Rwanda sends six players, led by Celestin Nsanzuwera, who finished runner-up in Thika to become the highest-ranked non-Kenyan on the tour.
Malawi’s Paul Chidale, Nigeria’s Olapade Sunday, Ghana’s Erick Kwame Ligbidi, Zimbabwe’s Liberty Gumisaa and Burundi’s Salum Nkurunziza add further continental depth.
Adding local interest, Naomi Wafula will make her professional debut at Nyali after turning pro this season.
“This is a dream I’ve worked toward for years. The tour is the perfect place to test myself against top players and grow,” said Wafula, a former Kenya Ladies Golf Union Golfer of the Year.
The Sunshine Development Tour remains the only golf circuit in East and Central Africa offering Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, making it a vital stepping stone toward global tours and Olympic qualification.
After Nyali, the tour heads down the coast to Diamonds Leisure Beach & Golf Resort for the fourth leg from August 9-11, rounding off the Coast Region double-header and keeping the spotlight firmly on East Africa’s fast-growing golf scene.
