Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced plans to rename City Stadium to Joe Kadenge Stadium in honour of the legendary footballer who entertained football enthusiasts during the 70s and 80s with his outstanding football skills.

Sakaja said it would be honourable enough to show respect to the heroes and heroines in sports hence the idea of Nairobi County decided to remember the late Kadenge (pictured) and ensure his legacy lives on.

“I am proud to let you know that as Nairobi County, we have plans to sort out the City Stadium and call it the Joe Kadenge Stadium in honour of the work that the legend did,” Sakaja said.

Sakaja called upon all the other counties to join in the movement to support the sportspeople who have put the country on the world map.

“As the County Government, we want to commit to sports because it is an economic frontier that is mostly let down. We want to start investing in sports and arts since they will place us on the world map,” Sakaja added.

The County Chief cited the likes of double world marathon record holder Faith Kipyegon, Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala, former world champion Julius Yego, and Wimbledon junior doubles champion Angella Okutoyi.

Kadenge is considered one of Kenya’s greatest players and is regarded as the finest footballer ever to grace Kenyan soccer pitches.

A winger, Kadenge played for Maragoli United, and scored the fastest-ever goal in the Kenyan Premier League. He also played club football for Abaluhya United, winning the Kenyan Premier League in 1966. In addition, Kadenge was part of the Kenya national football team before going on to manage the Kenya national football team in 2002.
